Vashon Island via the Virginia V

Our club's Vashon Island routes are very traditional but our way
to get to the island across Puget Sound from Seattle was not.

Instead of taking the regular Washington State Ferries, members decided
to take the Virginia V, the last of the famous Mosquito Boat Fleet.

The Virginia V docks at Lake Union's Historic Ships Dock
requiring you to enter and exit the lake via the ship canal.

The boat is powered by a 19th Century Steam Engine which requires
a watchful eye from the crew to insure its proper operation.

The normal time to cross Puget Sound from Seattle to Vashon Island
is about 20 minutes. On the Virginia V it takes about 3 hours.

On Vashon Island cyclists on the Virginia V meet up with other
club members that slept in and took the regular ferry over.

Everyone decided on a nice scenic loop around the main island
with a stop at Jensen Point for mid way picnic and socializing.

To get all back to Seattle at a normal hour
everyone takes the Vashon Island to Fauntleroy Ferry.
